چکیده

Background During the past few decades several international initiatives have been adopted to promote the implementation of an Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM). The 1995 FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries has been developed as a reference framework for sustainable fisheries addressing ecosystem considerations, principles and goals needed for EAFM (Garcia & Cochrane, 2005). The FAO code states that fisheries management should ensure the conservation not only of target species, but also sympatric non-target species. This resolution is now explicit in most Moreover, for marine ecosystems and populations of non-target, associated and dependent species, the WCPFC, IATTC, SPRFMO and CCAMRL conventions state that improved knowledge should be acquired, the impacts of natural factors and human activities should be assessed, monitoring should be continued or implemented, and conservation and management measures and recommendations should be adopted.

SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE SEVENTH REGULAR SESSION 9-17 August 2011 Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia Prospects for effective conservation of bigeye tuna stocks in the Western Central Pacific Ocean WCPFC-SC7-2011/MI-WP-05

The Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) agreed to close certain high-seas areas in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean to purse seine tuna fishing starting in 2010. These measures have potential economic benefits to the countries surrounding the closed areas and may also have potential stock conservation benefits for tunas. We used a spatially explicit ecosystem model of ...

Abstract The effects of tori-line streamer types on seabirds avoidance were examined with the data from Japanese observer program in southern bluefin tuna fishery. Nominal catch rates (catch/1000 hooks) and per-capita catch rates (catch/1000 hooks/albatross abundance) were compared between “WCPFC type” streamers and “Light type” (polypropylene band) streamers. There was no significant differenc...
